Homeschool Roundup: Summa'-summa'-summa'time.

This year has felt particularly busy.

I've always envisioned myself as a "year round" schooler, especially with how relaxed we are on a daily basis.

This summer has been a whirlwind of camping trips, family gatherings, and celebrations.  I have taken long trips and short trips.  We have come and gone as individuals and as a family.

The point being that as the children age, my wife and I are able to travel and take some time to ourselves, which inherently puts stress on any sort of structure we have built up for schooling.  So as summer beat on, our homeschool routine became the exception and not the rule.  (which didn't stop it from looming over me constantly.)

So, to finally bring this long ramble to some semblance of a topic.

We will be talking tonight on discord (with any welcome guests) about what it is like to take a break from explicitly schooling.  When you are just teaching your kids to be good and productive people, does it make sense to relax on that, or should we just be soldiering on.

Homeschool Roundup: Natural Consequences

Natural Consequences is a buzzword that has made it's way into many parenting circles.

It has been used so much I DON"T KNOW WHAT IT MEANS ANYMORE!

Maury and I are going to talk about what we think it means in the realm of parenting, join us on discord to add to the conversation.

As always questions about the organization are always welcome.

Homeschool Roundup - Organization stuff

I'm still shaking things up, but I think I have decided on google calendar and the google suite of tools to be our primary organization tool.

With that in mind, it isn't as straight forward as it probably should be.

Tonight, I won't be streaming live or even recording anything but I will be on the discord server.  found here "https://discord.gg/Ndtjgz" tonight, to answer questions and be a tech support type guy.

While I'm here I'm also probably going to be setting up two different MOOC style courses for FAHA, one literature based and one that is coding based.  I plan on using Discord as a home base for commenting on and sharing progress for these courses.

Hope to have a few people to talk to this evening.

Again, nothing will be recorded and we won't be live tonight.  Just a hangout and talk opportunity.

Homeschool Roundup : Intelligence

I recently had a brief conversation with a friend after some board games. Somehow it kept circling back to the idea of being "intelligent" enough, or "not intelligent" enough to manage certain type of games.  This really rubbed me the wrong way, and I kept trying to change the word from intelligence to skilled, practiced, familiar, ... . anything but intelligent.

I was not satisfied with where the conversation ended, so I'd like to take up the topic again.

The gist of my stance is :

"Intelligence is just a mixed bag of experiences, confidence, affinities and practice. Recognition of intelligence is mostly fashion, not an innate truth."
